Green Road to Nowhere

After over a decade of austerity most people would never consider voting for FG or FF ever again. Yet the Greens consider coalition.

At a time when the Governments record has been brought into disrepute over serious issues from housing to health to broadband, the Green party would consider it acceptable to continue a programme of neoliberal scorched earth economics with either of the grandfather parties, institutions that have sewn themselves into the fabric of the state, one that's previously driven the economy over the cliff and the other that's sold all the pieces.

I understand that some Greens are conflicted by the urgency of the global warming crisis, so much so that they believe propping up a failed system will make a difference so long as there is a green mascot in the Dail, a wolf dressed in hemp clothing to cheer on what can only be described as an environmentally wreckless bulldozer.

Being in opposition doesn't stop you from proposing bills and getting cross party support to get them through the Dail. What being in opposition allows you to do is show that you represent different values and offer an alternative to the government, an alternative way of running the country. The Green party have instead showed cowardice and would rather play the landlords groundskeeper than lead a social revolution.

The Green Party have to learn to live by the sword, they have to be willing to set basic principles for themselves and stand with conviction in their beliefs. The EU elections showed us how easily the big parties can green wash campaigns. This is because the green voice is meek and it's hard to recognise the difference between a FG blow in and a genuine candidate for the Greens.

To change this position we need a radical Green Party that doesn't lose ground to penny shop candidates standing on an "environmental" platform. The Greens need to stand out from the herd not assimilate into it. They need a creative program for government that sees them winning more seats instead of whimpering around scavaging votes off of milinials, a generation who want little more than an alternative to an establishment that has ignored them.

The Greens agreeing to coalition is the greens agreeing to non progress. The only way for Ireland to change is to vote for change and I for one am not going to waste my vote on some FG mascot who will continue to support an austerity government.
