The alt right is rising, the neon Nazis are assembling, and Jim Corr is crowd funding Ben Gilroy.

We have more right wing activists in Ireland that you can imagine, from dress up journalists to local councillor twerps.

Commentators like Jeggit have warned us of the dangers of astroturfers, ominous sponsors of groups here like Irexit/Renua/Pro Life etc. It's very clear that Irexit has contributors from the UK who have their own agenda and we've seen recently that anti abortion activists in America are looking to campaign outside abortion centres here in Ireland, so the threat of astroturfers is real.

For the first time since the flight of Eoin O'Duffy right wing demagogues are getting organised on our shores. What ever your political opinions are don't be manipulated by their fear mongering and hatred. Help spread truth and dialogue. There are campaigners in every town and village in Ireland who stand for worker's rights, social justice, and the needs of the community. It's time to get organised, support one another, and fight Jim Corr

"I did not kill President Kennedy or Officer Tippit. If you want me to cop out to hitting, or pleading guilty to hitting a cop in the mouth when I was arrested, yeah, I plead guilty to that. But I do deny shooting both the president and Tippit."

Years after he was murdered Lee Harvey Oswald’s final interview with police would spark multitudes of conspiracy theories. Was he a patsy as he claimed or simply a mad man with a contorted vision for his country.

To the same degree I wonder about our young minister for health, mocked on social media as "Posh Boy" he has found himself in a position that most politicians would consider a poisoned chalice, leading a department plagued with legacy issues.

Is he a patsy in all this or simply a naive freshman with insufficient managerial experience, insufficient experience at negotiating with unions, and insufficient experience at running a department of government.

I've no doubt Simon is a nice young lad who means well. My own opinion is that he focused on delivering a landmark victory for the abortion referendum and the subsequent negotiations to ensure it was enacted, so much so that he's taken his energy away from running the department. Just my own thoughts, it's a tough job, he hasn't tried to lay blame on anyone else for the spiraling bill and cost to the taxpayer, and he's come out to apologize for previous statements which may have been misleading to the Dail.

I suppose the question we have to ask ourselves is do we accept his apology and move on, do we accept this cop out, or do we hold him accountable for the full responsibility of his department.

Personally I think that there is little room for apprenticeships at the head of the Department of Health and he should resign to save face, but ultimately there should be a vote of no confidence in him given the financial implications of his mistakes.

The Educated Democrat

“They used to say a rising tide lifted all boats, now the rising tide just seems to lift the yachts.” Ed Miliband

Why is it that in a democratic society we deal with gaping inequality and mass poverty? Democracy is the collective power of the people, and the majority of people are decent individuals, charitable, and fair minded.

So how do we end up with politicians who deny climate change, normalise homelessness, and ignore the basic needs of the people?

The answer is that people aren’t educated in democracy and as a result democracy fails the people. Democracy may be an imperfect ideology but it is a powerful tool that can safeguard equality. However if people aren’t thought how to use it then democracy becomes a form of corrupt government powered by the votes of an ill informed jury of children.

Thomas Jefferson once wrote; "Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the people alone. The people themselves, therefore, are its only safe depositories. And to render even them safe, their minds must be improved to a certain degree."

A state’s investment in its education is the only method it has to safeguard its democracy. If there is vast inequality in the education system a state is simply sowing the seeds of inequality and disruption. Without the potential of enlightenment through the education of ethics and political philosophy people will continue to select candidates who misrepresent their core values and humane instincts to care for the poor.

Inequality in education is the biggest threat we are facing in society right now, it has lead to a colossal disconnect with politics, the rise of demagogues, and the lack of accountability in government.  The education system needs to be reassessed and revamped if we are to get serious about creating a just society and eradicating poverty.
